Lumbar Microdiscectomy / Decompression
What is it?
Lumbar Microdiscectomy is a specialized, minimally invasive surgical procedure primarily performed to decompress, or relieve pressure from the spinal nerves. A herniated disc in the lumbar spine can bulge out and press against these nerves, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness, often radiating down the legs – a condition commonly known as sciatica.
The recovery process usually involves a brief hospital stay followed by rest and gradual resumption of activities. Patients may be advised to avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities for a certain period.
Physical therapy may be recommended to strengthen the back muscles and improve flexibility, aiding in a smoother recovery and reducing the risk of future spinal issues
Procedure
During the procedure, the spinal surgeon makes a small incision in the lower back. Using specialized instruments and operating under a microscope, the surgeon carefully removes only the portion of the herniated disc that is pressing against the spinal nerve. This targeted removal reduces the pressure on the nerve, effectively alleviating the patient’s symptoms. Microsurgical techniques allow for a focused and less invasive approach, minimizing the disruption to surrounding tissues and muscles.
Patients often experience immediate or rapid relief from their symptoms following the procedure, especially the radiating leg pain.
This surgery is most suitable for patients without relief from non-surgical treatments, such as physical therapy, medication, or injections, whose symptoms significantly impact their quality of life.
