What is it?
Spinal epidural abscess is an infection that forms in the space between the bones of the spine and the lining membrane of the spinal cord. It results in a pocket of pus that builds up and causes swelling, and it can press against spinal bones and the membranes that protect spinal cord. An epidural abscess is a condition that needs to be treated right away. Spinal epidural abscess is typically caused by a Staphylococcus aureus bacterial infection, but it also can be caused by fungus or another germ.
Symptoms
The symptoms of an epidural abscess depend on the location of the abscess. An epidural abscess may cause fever, unusual sensation throughout the body, problems with coordination and movement, general weakness of the muscles in both the arms and legs that worsens, pain in the back, and inability to control bowels or bladder
Diagnosis
Diagnostic tests and exams may include:
- Neurological exam
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
- Computed tomography (CT) scan
- Tests of a fluid sample from the abscessed area to determine the cause of the infection
- Blood tests to look for germs and other signs of infection
Treatment
Treatment of spinal epidural abscesses typically includes surgery and antibiotics or antifungals. If the abscess is placing pressure on the spinal cord, surgical decompression of the spinal cord to reduce/remove the pressure by performing a laminectomy to remove the lamina, which is the bone that covers the spinal canal.
